RESEARCH
Four months of Residents' time is designated for research. One month of protected research time is assigned in the R2 year to design, fund and gain I.R.B. approval for studies. Three months of dedicated time is scheduled in the R3 year for data collection, writing and completion of projects. Additional dedicated time may be allotted for worthy projects.
For each project, a Department of Head and Neck Surgery (HNS) physician, and a Division of Research (DOR) physician are assigned as advisors. Space, computers and other equipment are available in both HNS and DOR departments for otolaryngology projects. Very supportive multimedia and medical editing departments offer worthwhile assistance for presentations and publications.
We have the following expectations of the four or more research projects developed during residency:
Our widely respected clinical research work is published in the prominent scientific journals of our specialty. During your interview day you will see a poster display of our research work. Notice:
Residents are introduced to the basic principles of research through an annual three-month series of weekly lectures sponsored by the Division of Research. Research projects are reviewed departmentally on a monthly basis to update existing projects and discuss future project ideas.
Each Resident formulates with staff consultation four research projects, the results of which are to be presented and of publication quality. The annual focus for Resident research is the Bay Area Residents' Research Symposium (B.A.R.R.S.).
B.A.R.R.S. provides a unique forum for otolaryngology Residents to present their original research projects. This is the only multi-institute symposium devoted solely to Resident research in our specialty. Participants have included Kaiser Permanente Oakland, the Universities of California at Davis, San Francisco, Irvine, Los Angeles and San Diego; Loma Linda, the University of Utah and Oak Knoll Naval Medical programs. A panel of respected otolaryngologists judge and offer Residents constructive criticism on the design, validity and presentation of their research. Our Residents have won numerous awards over the years for their research work.
