THIRD-YEAR RESIDENTS (PGY-3)

PGY-3 Residents go through three rotations - Kaiser Permanente Medical Center (KPMC)-Oakland, KPMC-Research and KPMC-Hayward.

The PGY-3 spends six months at KMPC-Oakland on the clinical service. Beginning in 1997, Residents have their own clinics two to three half days per week. A staff physician is assigned for consultation. The PGY-3 has increased responsibility for patient care in the outpatient department, hospital and Emergency Department with appropriate staff back-up.

The PGY-3 spends approximately six to seven half days per week in the OR with a full-time staff attending. During this year, the PGY-3 performs a large number of more complex procedures in head and neck cancer and maxillofacial, plastic and reconstructive surgery. Initially, the Resident usually assists on major head and neck cancer resections. Maxillofacial, oculoplastic and plastic surgeons are available as departmental consultants for improved quality of care.

Having completed a temporal bone course with drilling dissections, the PGY-3 begins to perform intermediate otologic surgery such as tympanoplasties and simple mastoidectomies.

The PGY-3 spends a three-month block of time in research. This time is spent developing and completing projects generated in the research time during the PGY-2 year. Progress updates are given to the involved Otolaryngology -- Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) and Division of Research attending staff during this time.

A three-month KPMC-Hayward rotation is included in this year. This clinical rotation involves working as a Resident with six full-time board certified OHNS staff attendings. Areas of special clinical interest include exposure to parathyroid surgery, L.A.U.P. procedures (snoring laser surgery) and a hearing aid dispensing program.
