Clerkships in Pediatrics at Oakland

Pediatric Inpatient Subinternship

Kaiser Oakland is pleased to offer a four-week Pediatric Inpatient Subinternship to 4th year medical students who have completed their core pediatric rotation at a U.S. medical school. Rotations are offered August through June for one student per month. In addition, we have subinternships available in our outpatient clinics and NICU. Information on these can be obtained from our Medical Education Department at (510) 752-1375.

The Pediatric Department at Kaiser Oakland consists of a large primary care outpatient division with over 100,000 clinic visits per year, an inpatient service with a 24 bed general Pediatric ward, a 6 bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a 29 bed Intensive Care Nursery, and a well baby nursery that cares for approximately 2000 babies per year. The Pediatric Residency Program at Kaiser Oakland is comprised of 19 residents (6 residents per year plus a chief resident.)

The Pediatric ward has approximately 1000 admissions each year with an excellent mix of both general and subspecialty Pediatrics, including hematology, oncology, endocrinology, nephrology, gastroenterology, neurology, pulmonology, general surgery, orthopedics, HNS, and urology. The Pediatric Inpatient service is an educational service managed by the Pediatric Residents under the supervision of Board Certified Pediatric Attending Physicians. The ward team consists of 2 senior residents, 2 interns and a third year medical student from UCSF completing their core pediatrics rotation.

As part of the inpatient team, you will function, with supervision, as the primary caretaker for your assigned patients. You will be able to work-up admissions, develop care plans, write histories and physicals, daily notes, and orders, which will be reviewed and countersigned by your supervising residents. You will have the opportunity to attend our morning and lunchtime teaching conferences, and will be expected to participate in resident work and attending rounds. In addition, you will have the chance to expand your pediatric knowledge base by reading about your patient's diagnoses, preparing a talk for the ward team, and meeting with the Chief Resident weekly for a medical student teaching session. There will also be opportunities to perform routine ward procedures such as venipuncture and IV placement. Call will be every 4-5 nights.

Our emphasis at Kaiser Oakland is on your education and helping our students and residents grow into superb and compassionate physicians. By the end of your rotation at Kaiser Oakland, it is our goal that you will:

1. Improve your history and physical examination skills.
2. Improve your skills at forming problem lists and differential diagnoses, and have begun to develop your own diagnostic work-up and therapeutic plans.
3. Develop the necessary organizational skills to help you to function as an intern.
4. Begin to learn how to prioritize medical problems.
5. Expand your pediatric knowledge
6. Have a pleasurable and rewarding experience
