Clerkships in Pediatrics at Oakland
Pediatric Outpatient Subinternship
Kaiser Oakland is pleased to offer a four week Pediatric Outpatient Subinternship to 4th year medical students who have completed their core pediatric rotation at a U.S. medical school. Rotations are offered August through June for one student per month. In addition, we offer subinternships on our Pediatric ward and in our NICU. Information on these can be obtained by contacting our Medical Education Department at (510) 752-1375.
The Pediatric Department at Kaiser Oakland consists of a large primary care and subspecialty outpatient division and an inpatient service with a 24 bed general Pediatric ward, a 6 bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a 29 bed Intensive Care Nursery, and a well baby nursery that cares for approximately 2000 babies per year. The Pediatric Residency Program at Kaiser Oakland is comprised of 19 residents (6 residents per year plus a chief resident).
The Pediatric clinic at Kaiser Oakland has approximately 100 000 patient visits every year, with a mix of urgent care, well-child, and subspecialty visits. The general pediatric clinic is staffed by 25 general pediatricians, and the subspecialty clinic has representatives from a wide range of the pediatric subspecialties; including pediatric neurology, gastroenterolgy, nephrology, pulmonology, genetics, hematology, oncology, cardiology, and endocrinology. We are also the regional referral center for other specialty clinics, including the cystic fibrosis clinic, spina bfida clinic, craniofacial clinic, metabolic clinic, diabetes clinic, and lipid clinic, among others.
Our Outpatient Subinternship is designed to give you exposure to both general and subspecialty pediatrics. The majority of your time will be spent in the general pediatric clinic. In this clinic, you will have your own schedule of patients, including both urgent care and well-child visits. You will have the opportunity to perform the history and physical on your patient, formulate a differential diagnosis and therapeutic plan, and then present it to the attending precepting pediatrician. The general pediatric clinic is always staffed by a supervising attending pediatrician, and there are usually 2-3 residents and a 3rd year medical student from University of California at San Francisco.
You will also have the opportunity to attend many of our subspecialty clinics, with possibilities including our sickle cell clinic, cystic fibrosis clinic, or one of those listed above among others. You will also be expected to attend our morning and lunchtime teaching conferences.
In addition, we also have 2 to 4 week elective rotations available in one of Pediatric Pulmonology, Neurology, or Hematology/Oncology. During these rotations you will spend time primarily in the clinic seeing consults with the subspecialists, the remainder of the time will be spent seeing patients on the ward on whom referrals have been made for subspecialty care.
Our emphasis at Kaiser Oakland is on your education and helping our students and residents grow into superb and compassionate physicians. By the end of your rotation at Kaiser Oakland, it is our goal that you will:
1. Improve your history and physical examination skills.
2. Improve your skills at forming problem lists and differential diagnoses.
3. Begin to develop your own diagnostic work-up and therapeutic plans, including the appropriate use of lab tests.
4. Begin to understand when follow-up is needed for patients seen in clinic.
5. Expand your knowledge of pediatric medicine through patients seen.
6. Have a pleasurable and rewarding experience.
