CLINICAL TEACHING PROGRAM
Emphasis on Teaching
At Oakland, we give you the tools necessary to be an exemplary
teacher. Summer 2007 begins our Clinical Teaching Program (CTP).
This program is designed to:
- enhance your versatility and effectiveness as a teacher
- improve your ability to analyze and evaluate teaching using
an educational framework
- provide a forum for collegial exchange of ideas
Teaching is a critical function of residents and faculty during
residency and beyond, yet fewer than 1% of clinical physician educators
receive any formal instruction in effective teaching methods. Residents
are asked to be outstanding teachers but often are given no specifics
on how to accomplish this goal!

Did you know:
- at any given moment in a typical college lecture only 20% of
the students are concentrating on the lecturer
- students retain approximately 39% of factual information immediately
after a lecture and only 3% of factual information less than one
month later?
- teachers have been found to wait, on average, only one second
for the answer to a question they have posed?
The Clinical Teaching Program is offered to all residents and
attendings, enabling a more effective learning environment using
evidence-based educational principles.
The program consists of seven two-hour small group seminars. These
interactive sessions consist of didactic presentations, group discussions,
videotape review, and role play exercises.
What results can you expect?
Numerous studies have been done on this material, showing:
- statistically significant improvements for all categories of
teaching skills covered
- new teaching approaches implemented by the teachers
- improved attitudes toward clinical teaching
- improved general satisfaction about the physician’s role
as clinician-educator
- long-term benefit
Come join our team at Kaiser Oakland and get the instruction in
clinical teaching methods needed to maximize your future teaching
effectiveness!
