Internal Medicine/Masters of Public Health at Oakland

Kaiser Permanente, Internal Medicine Residency Program, Oakland
University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health

The Kaiser Permanente Oakland Internal Medicine Residency Program is pleased to announce the development of a combined Internal Medicine/Masters of Public Health (IM/MPH) track, in partnership with the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health (UC Berkeley). The IM/MPH program is designed for medical school graduates who are interested in developing specific knowledge and skills in public health during their residency training in internal medicine. Kaiser Permanente provides the unique opportunity to study patient populations in a world class health care delivery system with a rich, longitudinal health data repository. The resident will complete internal medicine requirements in the first three years of training at Kaiser Permanente Oakland, with an emphasis in research and other specific rotations at our KP Division of Research, in preparation for the MPH year at UC Berkeley. Residents on this track will complete applications to the UC Berkeley School of Public Health by December 1st of their third year. The MPH year will constitute the 4th year of the program. During the MPH year, Kaiser Permanente will pay IM/MPH residents a salary at the Post Graduate Year 4th year level, plus tuition support for the MPH degree. The objectives of the IM/MPH track are:

  • To expand the resident’s knowledge and skills beyond diagnosis and treatment of individuals to encompass community assessment and the design and evaluation of population based interventions.
  • To enhance the resident’s skills in health promotion, chronic disease management, injury prevention, and disaster preparedness.
  • To increase the resident’s knowledge and competence in the applications of public health core competencies in biostatistics, epidemiology, health policy and management; and to develop an in-depth understanding of the interaction of environmental factors and social behavior on health outcomes.
  • To expand the resident’s understanding of a systems-based health practice.
