Internal Medicine at Oakland
Lifestyle
Balance- it is one
of the most important skills a physician must acquire and we believe
it is an integral part to residency training. Balance of play, rest,
and work, family and friends and making time for daily physical
activity is necessary for a successful and satisfying career in
medicine.

We have designed a program that gives great clinical preparation
and time to consolidate knowledge using traditional (lectures and
books) as well as new technologies (CD ROMs, web-based learning,
and simulation). We are designing innovative teaching tools to allow
residents to do some web-based training at home.
The Bay Area is a vibrant community full of outdoor adventure with
all the cultural benefits of a large cosmopolitan area. It boasts
top restaurants, theater, an opera house and ballet as well as an
active local music scene. From family-friendly parks including the
Little Farm at nearby Tilden Park and the newly renovated Children’s
Zoo at the Oakland Zoo to skiing and camping at Lake Tahoe, there
is truly something for everyone.
Healthy
Lifestyle - By honoring duty-hours and eliminating
long and overnight call, our residents are able
to balance their clinical and educational goals with an active life
outside of the Medical Center. Even on-site, there are many ways
to promote your health.
• On-site Farmer’s Market every Friday
• Hospital Cafeteria with Healthy Choices menu
• On-campus gym
• On-site classes (ie. Tai Chi, yoga etc)
• On-line links for tracking personal healthy living at kp.org
Our Chief Residents arrange monthly outings (restaurants,
BBQs and breweries), as well as wine tasting in the nearby Napa
and Sonoma Wineries, and all residents attend yearly class retreats.
We are also exploring innovative teaching with residents spending
some time telecommuting using CD ROMs and other web-based teaching
tools.
