Obstetrics & Gynecology at Oakland

Welcome

Our Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at Kaiser Permanente East Bay (Oakland) is dedicated to providing an outstanding academic program while remaining supportive and committed to our larger community.

Academics

We promote evidence-based medicine and support interactive, dynamic learning in a variety of settings. Beyond the routine M&M, Journal Club, Pre-Operative Conferences and protected teaching time weekly Kaiser East Bay (Oakland) participates in Critical Events Training, Surgical Simulation, Obstetrical Emergency Simulation and Mock Oral Examinations.

Critical Events Training consists of simulated obstetrical emergencies performed on the actual labor and delivery unit with all members of the labor and delivery team involved. This encourages team communication and learning in addition to learning surrounding obstetrical emergencies.
Surgical Simulation training for the second, third and fourth year residents will occur at the MOET Institute three full days per year and will improve both laparoscopic and hysteroscopic skills with consistent evaluation and feedback provided.

Obstetrical Emergency Simulation will be taking place at the Simulation Center at Samuel Merritt. This training is meant to evaluate the limitations and skills of each resident for certain emergencies they will encounter in their careers. This state of the art simulation center will allow us to record each resident as they perform shoulder dystocia maneuvers, care for a patient with eclampsia or hemorrhage and then review with the group learning points from their simulated experiences.

Mock Oral Examinations were introduced at the urging of the residents. The residents collect a small caselist and go through a simulated oral examination. This not only prepares them for the oral examination after residency but also encourages learning and improves oral communications skills which are beneficial during residency as well.

Community

We are dedicated to our immediate and global community. We encourage residents to participate in volunteer activities or international service. There are numerous opportunities and residents are allowed 2 elective months to create their own experiences. Currently we are working with the Internal Medicine and Pediatric Departments to provide a multidisciplinary teen clinic at a local Oakland high school. We feel both our Kaiser community and the Oakland community would both greatly benefit from this partnership.

We are strongly committed to providing a supportive and challenging learning environment with graduated resident responsibility. We are dedicated to providing new and innovative ways for our residents to challenge themselves and become competent and caring Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
