Many of the faculty hold clinical appointments at the University of California, San Francisco and/or Children's Hospital Oakland. Many of the staff are graduates of the Kaiser Permanente Oakland Residency Program or other local programs such as the University of California, San Francisco, Children's Hospital Oakland, and Stanford University.

Program Director – Beth Culler, MD

Dr. Beth Culler was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. She received her undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Williams College in Massachusetts. She then returned to Toronto to obtain her medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.

After receiving her medical degree, Dr. Culler moved to the Bay Area and completed her residency training and a chief residency year at Kaiser Oakland. She joined the staff of the Pediatric Department in 2000.

Dr. Culler has been actively involved with resident and medical student education since her hire, working with students and residents both as a ward attending and as a clinic preceptor. She became Assistant Program Director and Medical Student Clerkship Director in 2001, and subsequently became Program Director in 2003. She is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Francisco. Away from the hospital, Dr. Culler enjoys spending time with her husband and dog, gardening, travelling, and playing tennis.

Chief of Outpatient and Subspecialty Pediatrics – Melvin Burman, MD

Dr. Burman is the Chief of Outpatient and Subspecialty Pediatrics at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Oakland, California. He has been practicing as a General Pediatrician with Kaiser for over 20 years. During this time, he has had a number of different roles within the organization, but his greatest pleasure remains taking care of his patients. He has been recognized for his outstanding work as a pediatrician through numerous awards, including the Karis “Caring Physician” Award and the Donald P. Fischer award. In addition, his leadership skills have been recognized through the Kaiser Richmond Career Leadership Award and the Cecil Cutting Leadership Award.

Dr. Burman was born and raised in San Francisco. He completed his medical school training at Finch University of Health Sciences/the Chicago Medical School, and his residency training at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center at Oakland. As a former resident, he is well-acquainted with the philosophy of the program and is a tremendous advocate for residency training and education.

In his spare time, Dr. Burman enjoys running, cross-country skiing, and his Labrador Retriever. He is also a dedicated San Francisco Giant and Forty-Niner fan.

Chief of Inpatient Pediatrics – Jorge Gutierrez, MD

Dr. Gutierrez is the Chief of Inpatient Pediatrics at Kaiser Permanente at Oakland. He completed his medical school training at Harvard Medical School and his residency and fellowship training in Pediatric Intensive Care at the University of California at San Francisco. After completing his fellowship, he remained at UCSF as a faculty member, working both in the PICU and running a research laboratory studying the effects of mechanical forces on gene expression in lung cells. In 2005, he left UCSF to join the staff in the Pediatric ICU at Kaiser Oakland.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gutierrez has been very involved with resident education and is a great advocate for residency training. While at UCSF, he was the recipient of teaching awards as a resident, fellow, and faculty member. In 2007, he received the inpatient faculty teaching award from the Kaiser residents as well.

In his spare time, Dr. Gutierrez enjoys playing baseball. He plays second base for the Zephyrs of the Bay Area Men’s Baseball League.

Assistant Program Director - Rebecca Gentemann, MD

Dr. Rebecca Gentemann was born near St. Louis, MO but grew up in San Jose, CA. She was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from U.C. Davis before returning to the Midwest, attending Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, where she received her medical degree in 2001.

Dr. Gentemann came back to the Bay Area and completed her residency training and chief resident year at Kaiser Oakland. She joined the Pediatric Department clinic staff and became an Assistant Program Director in 2006. She continues her involvement with medical students and residents as a clinic preceptor.

Dr Gentemann enjoys spending her time outside of the office gardening, cooking, and hiking with her dog.


Assistant Program Director – Garrett Griffin, MD

From the Bay Area, Dr. Garrett Griffin earned his undergraduate degree in Physics from Santa Clara University. He completed his medical studies at University of California, Davis Medical Center. He then completed his residency training and chief resident year at Kaiser Oakland.

Currently, Dr. Griffin is a neonatal hospital based physician and Assistant Program Director. His outside interests include gardening, video production, and anything to do with computers.
