POSTDOCTORAL RESIDENCY IN PSYCHOLOGY

The Department of Psychiatry offers two full-time (40 hours) postdoctoral residency positions; Residents will work primarily in either adult services or child/family services. Additionally, each post-doc will be able to participate in rotations such as the intensive outpatient program, the crisis response team, or in the DBT program.

THE SETTING

Richmond

Richmond is located 16 miles northeast of San Francisco on a peninsula dividing the San Francisco and San Pablo Bays. The medical center is located a few blocks from a BART station (Kaiser provides a shuttle) and is close to the 80 and 580 freeways. Richmond’s central location makes it within commuting distance of Contra Costa, Alameda, San Francisco, Marin, and Solano Counties.

Patient Population

Kaiser Richmond is part of the East Bay Service area, the most diverse within all of Kaiser. The patients at our medical center are Kaiser Health Plan members who live primarily in Richmond, San Pablo, El Cerrito, El Sobrante and surrounding communities. The ethnic population of our service area is 23% African American, 15% Asian American (the largest groups being, in descending order, Filipino, Chinese, Laotian, Japanese, Indian, Korean, and Vietnamese), 25% Caucasian, 32% Hispanic, and 5% other. We serve a fairly large monolingual, Spanish-speaking population. Our patient population is also richly diverse socio-economically, educationally, and diagnostically. We serve all age groups.

The Staff

The professional staff in our department consists of 17 psychologists, 7 psychiatrists, 10 licensed clinical social workers, 1 marriage and family therapist, and 1 clinical nurse specialist. We also have 4 receptionists, 2 chart room staff, an administrative assistant, and an office manager.

Services

The Department of Psychiatry is divided into four primary service teams: Adult, Child and Family, Intensive Outpatient/Case Management, and Chemical Dependency. All teams are in the same location allowing for efficient and effective consultation. We provide individual, group, and family (including couples) therapy, psychological assessment, psycho-educational classes, case management, medication management and psychiatric crisis management. Our department provides a broad assortment of groups for both children and adults. The members of the staff represent a variety of theoretical orientations with psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral being the most prominent.

THE TRAINING PROGRAM

General Principles

Our training program is designed so that post-doctoral fellows can polish their clinical skills as well as develop new ones, build cultural competence, solidify a professional identity as a psychologist, and develop a sense of confidence of being “job ready” by the end of training year. Our goal is to give our fellows a sense of functioning independently while receiving a high level of support and training. Our department is invested in providing quality training because it keeps our current clinicians sharp and provides us with a pool of competent psychologist for possible future hire.

Training

Our training program is based on APA guidelines for post-doctoral training. The training consists of 2 hours per week of individual supervision by two different supervisors, one hour per week of group supervision/case conference, one hour per week of didactic training provided by our staff (topics include brief psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and crisis management), one hour per week of assessment seminar and one afternoon per month of didactic training provided to all post-doctoral fellows in the region with expert speakers, and attendance at departmental grand rounds and case conferences. Fellows will have the opportunity to learn best practices treatment models developed by Kaiser based on current research. They also have the opportunity to provide supervision for practicum-level students.  All of our training emphasizes the importance of culture and other diversity factors in providing quality care.

Post-Doctoral Fellow Duties

General duties include intake assessments; individual, family (or couples), and group psychotherapy, teaching of psycho-educational classes, and formal assessments. Fellows will also be asked to lead a brief seminar of their choice as part of our practicum-level training. Rotations on the crisis response team and/or intensive outpatient program are also possible.

Evaluations

Feedback is an important component of the training program. We encourage two-way feedback throughout the year. In addition, twice per year we ask our post-doctoral fellows to fill out an evaluation of the training program, and the primary supervisor (with input from other training staff) provides a written evaluation of the fellows.

Grievances

We encourage an attempt to resolve any grievance directly with the parties involved. We also encourage our fellows to address any problems with their primary supervisor, the training director and, if necessary, the department chief.
