Internal Medicine at Oakland

Our Program

We are an academic program noted for clinical excellence in a supportive and friendly environment. Oakland is the second most ethnically diverse city in the US and we have on-campus dedicated clinics that reflects this diversity including: Salud En Español, Asian clinic, and a Women’s Health clinic for a few examples. Our residents are well prepared for fellowship, and careers in hospital medicine, primary care, academic medicine or public health.  In the past two years, half of our residents have applied for and matched in a sub-specialty fellowship of their choosing.  Our graduates are highly sought for excellent Bay Area jobs both in and outside of Kaiser.

Our Residents

Oakland Kaiser has a proud tradition of graduate medical education and train residents not only in Internal Medicine but also in Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Head and Neck Surgery and General Surgery.  We have additional on-site residents from our affiliated residencies. To learn more about our residents, see Our Residents.

Patient Diversity / Social Mission

Oakland is the second most ethnically diverse city in the US and our patients' medical conditions reflect this.  Over 150 languages are spoken within our city limits.  As a non-profit organization, we have a very diverse case mix including Medicare/Medicaid patients as well as care of the uninsured:

  • Health-related community fairs/projects supported by Kaiser
  • In 2010, ranked 4th by DiversityInc magazine one of its Top 50 Companies for Diversity
  • Cardiology at San Francisco General Hospital/UCSF – a busy county hospital
  • Funded International medical rotations
  • All of our residents rotate through Oakland’s Malta Free-Clinic and the Asian Health Services Clinic of Oakland
  • On-site Farmer’s Market and locally grown produce served in the hospital

Our Philosophy

Our nurturing, friendly, and supportive program gives residents an optimal environment to train. We value resident autonomy and encourage residents to explore areas of interest to help them reach their personal career goals.

Sixty years ago, Kaiser’s founding leaders believed their health plan should include three things:

  1. quality patient care
  2. clinical research to advance patient care
  3. dedication to medical education through residency training

Quality/System of Care

Kaiser has long been a leader in the use of medical technology and our 100% fully integrated electronic medical record is in the top 4% of programs nationwide!  Come to Oakland Kaiser and you can throw away your pen and paper!  Our patient-centered system allows for easy, efficient and comprehensive patient history review facilitates quality care.  For example- the death rate from heart disease among the Kaiser members is 30 percent lower than the rest of the Northern California population, adjusted for age and gender.

Our integrated system has been noted as a model of a quality driven health plan:

"…my grandmother had been signed up under Kaiser Permanente for years. And it's actually one of the models of high-quality, cost-efficient care that's out there right now, partly because they maintain such a stable base of patients and they construct a whole team approach that has proven to be very effective. So my grandmother was generally very happy with her care, and if we could actually get our health-care system across the board to hit the efficiency levels of a Kaiser Permanente or a Cleveland Clinic or a Mayo or a Geisinger, we actually would have solved our problems. "

President Barack Obama
Time Magazine Interview
July 2009

"…like Mayo, it created what Elliott Fisher, of Dartmouth, calls an accountable-care organization. The leading doctors and the hospital system adopted measures to blunt harmful financial incentives, and they took collective responsibility for improving the sum total of patient care.

This approach has been adopted in other places, too: the Geisinger Health System, in Danville, Pennsylvania; the Marshfield Clinic, in Marshfield, Wisconsin; Intermountain Healthcare, in Salt Lake City; Kaiser Permanente, in Northern California. All of them function on similar principles. All are not-for-profit institutions. And all have produced enviably higher quality and lower costs than the average American town enjoys. "
