Training Personalization

Electives and Mentorships within the Standard Categorical track

Our goal at Kaiser Santa Clara is to help you personalize your training to best prepare you for the career you want. The following electives and experiences are encouraged for residents interested in the traditional career types below. However residents are free to mix-and-match to build a curriculum that most closely meets their individual career goals.

Hospitalist Electives - for residents interested in a career in hospital medicine:

Dr. Mierendorf Mentor: Dr. S. Mierendorf

  • Palliative care
  • Pre-op clinic
  • Medicine consultant (surgical co-follow, medicine consult to other services)
  • Med-Orthopedics service
  • Inpatient Procedure Elective

Outpatient Electives – for residents interested in a career in outpatient medicine:

Outpatient Selective Rotation:

Choose 4 “selective” specialties to work in each morning for a week, with outpatient clinic in the afternoons. Examples include:

  • Palliative care
  • Urology
  • Allergy and Immunology
  • Head and Neck
  • Pain Clinic
  • Musculoskeletal Clinic
  • Outpatient Procedures

Dr. Maier Mentor: Dr. J. Maier

Research/Fellowship Mentorship - for residents intersted in fellowship and/or research

Dr. Burns Mentor: Dr. T. Burns

Dr. Rajan Mentor: Dr. S. Rajan

  • Clinical research project
  • Kaiser Regional research training course (required for all interns).
  • Three weeks of dedicated research time, in addition to other elective time.
  • Statistics and poster assistance by Kaiser Division of Research.
  • Elective in chosen speciality during first year or early second year, followed by an optional additional away elective in that speciality prior to interviews.
  • Assistance in application process, drafting of personal statements, and interview preparation

Leadership Selectives - for residents intersted in leadership experience

  • Membership in hospital committees.
  • Mentorship by Kaiser leadership, many of whom are former residents.
  • Quality Improvement project.

Community Service

  • Indian Health Clinic
  • Work with local schools and free clinics
  • Work with Community Benefits Department

CHOICE Primary Care Track

A unique 3-year internal medicine track for residents with goals in primary care, emphasizing:

  • Chronic Conditions Management
  • Health Maintanence
  • Outpatient Subspecializatin
  • Information Technology
  • Community Service
  • Executive Skills
