Electives and Mentorships within the Standard Categorical track
Our goal at Kaiser Santa Clara is to help you personalize your training to best prepare you for the career you want.
The following electives and experiences are encouraged for residents interested in the traditional career types below. However residents are free to mix-and-match to build a curriculum that most closely meets their individual career goals.

- Palliative care
- Pre-op clinic
- Medicine consultant (surgical co-follow, medicine consult to other services)
- Med-Orthopedics service
- Inpatient Procedure Elective

Outpatient Selective Rotation:
Choose 4 “selective” specialties to work in each morning for a
week, with outpatient clinic in the afternoons. Examples include:
- Palliative care
- Urology
- Allergy and Immunology
- Head and Neck
- Pain Clinic
- Musculoskeletal Clinic
- Outpatient Procedures

- Clinical research project
- Kaiser Regional research training
course (required for all interns).
- Three weeks of dedicated research
time, in addition to other elective time.
- Statistics and poster assistance by
Kaiser Division of Research.
- Elective in chosen speciality during
first year or early second year, followed by an
optional additional away elective in that speciality
prior to interviews.
- Assistance in application process, drafting of personal statements, and interview preparation

- Membership in hospital committees.
- Mentorship by Kaiser leadership, many of whom are former residents.
- Quality Improvement project.

- Work with local schools and free clinics

- Chronic Conditions Management
- Health Maintanence
- Outpatient Subspecializatin
- Information Technology
- Community Service
