RESIDENCY PROGRAMS

Obstetrics & Gynecology at San Francisco
Academic Training in a Positive Learning Environment
The Faculty and Residents in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco strongly encourage you to consider our Residency Training Program. Our academic program fills four PGY-1 positions each year through the National Resident Matching Program and is approved by the Residency Review Committee (RRC) for Obstetrics and Gynecology as a four-year structured educational experience. We received our third consecutive 5-year accreditation from the RRC in January 2008, a rare accomplishment for any residency.
Program Overview
Our program offers strong clinical experiences within a positive learning environment. Each resident’s educational experience is supplemented by strong core didactics, a longitudinal surgical skills curriculum and critical events team training. Residents have the opportunity to learn and provide care within an organization that is a world-wide leader in health care delivery and are afforded the full support that faculty receive to provide care to patients and learn systems-based practice. Our faculty are on duty in the hospital at all times to provide residents with supervision and immediate consultation, and the ratio of staff to residents in the ambulatory setting is very favorable and promotes strong oversight and education. Our program has a full-time staff of 34 Obstetrician/Gynecologists with superb representation in all areas of sub-specialization including:
- Maternal-Fetal Medicine
- Gynecologic Oncology
- Reproductive Endocrinology
- Urogynecologic & Pelvic Floor Surgery
- Chronic Pelvic Pain & Vulvo-vaginal Disorders
We are the regional referral center for maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, and chronic pelvic pain. Our organization is at the forefront of using electronic systems to improve patient care, with outpatient and inpatient charting now fully electronic. We have harnessed these powerful tools to make learning more efficient and facilitate research efforts. We follow patients longitudinally through all aspects of the continuum of care, giving trainees exposure to principles of population management, evidence-based medicine, quality improvement, and team-based acute and chronic care - the cornerstones of Kaiser Permanente medicine. Camaraderie among the residents and staff fosters a supportive environment conducive to learning and individual growth. Our rotations and night float schedule fully comply with the ACGME resident work hour guidelines.
We are strongly committed to providing graded responsibility for residents as they progress through our program and care for our large patient population. These patients reflect the diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds of San Francisco, including those of economic disadvantage. The abundant clinical and surgical experience our program provides is augmented by an academically vigorous teaching program. Particular attention is given to a systems-based approach to medicine, interpersonal communication skills and professionalism. Our teaching program is designed to foster a sense of intellectual curiosity and to stimulate residents to develop the life-long learning habits needed to master the evolving information required to provide quality obstetric, gynecologic, and primary health care for women.
