Lawrence Ford, DPM - Program Director

Lawrence Ford

I am fortunate to practice in a health care system that allows me to make medical decisions based on the best interests of my patients. The ability to practice foot and ankle surgery at the highest level within a collaborative multidisciplinary setting, without financial influence, is what most attracted me to this practice.

I was born in Wales, lived in different parts of the U.S., and now feel lucky to call Berkeley my home. My family and I love Northern California and all it has to offer. I have a passion for the outdoors including hiking, camping, backpacking, kayaking and more. I understand how important it is for my patients to want to be active and walk without pain. It is one of the reasons I pursued podiatric surgery as a career and it is a driving force in my quest to make my patients better.

My philosophy for treating foot and ankle pain and deformity is rooted in identifying and addressing the underlying causes. Treating only the symptoms without regard for the etiology usually leads to frustration. I have a particular interest in understanding the mechanical engineering of the foot, especially the impact that faulty mechanics and muscle imbalance have on the development of foot and ankle pain. I have enjoyed doing clinical research in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery and have been fortunate to author original articles and textbooks and lecture throughout the country on this interesting subject. I am currently the director of the Kaiser San Francisco Bay Area Foot and Ankle residency program which has produced and continues to produce many talented and well respected podiatric surgeons throughout the country. I am board-certified in foot and ankle surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and am a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

I like the practice model at Kaiser Permanente. I am able to do what I think is best for the patient, without basing decisions on financial concerns. I believe in applying common sense, efficiency, and engineering in both my approach to surgery and the patients’ choice of treatment. There is a collaborative atmosphere in the department and I get to handle a complexity of cases. I teach in the residency program as well, which is one of the best teaching programs for foot and ankle surgery in the United States. To date, I have had over 100 residents rotate through our hospital in various phases of training. I have had visiting fellows from all over the world including Australia, Italy, England, Germany, and Vietnam. I have performed operations in all of the Bay Area Kaiser facilities.

Last year, I traveled 140,000 miles to conferences, where I often speak about foot and ankle surgery. My areas of special interest include ankle replacement, complex trauma, revision surgery, and complex salvage reconstructions. I like to travel on medical missions, and most recently I traveled to Vietnam to perform reconstructive surgeries at Da Nang Orthopedic Hospital.

After majoring in physiological sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles. I developed an interest in medicine and health care. I returned home to Northern California to attend podiatry school in San Francisco and completed my residency in the Kaiser Permanente system. The Kaiser Permanente system impressed me in regards to the patient care and the camaraderie among the physicians. I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to practice with the Permanente Medical Group at the facility that I trained.

I maintain a broad scope of practice in trauma and reconstructive foot & ankle surgery. As an attending in well reputed residency program, I have the privilege of training young surgeons, keeping current with new technology, and participating in clinical research.
