Award Winning Resident Research

The past academic year was another banner one for resident research at Kaiser Permanente Northern California. Residents from several of our programs were honored at regional and national conferences.

The 22nd Annual Bay Area Residents’ Research Symposium in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery took place on Friday, June 2, 2006. Three of our residents won awards for their presentations.

W. Wallace Webster, MD Winner Best Basic Science “Functionality of the Human Vomeronasal Organ ”

Paul Krause, MD Winner Best Case Report “The Otologic Manisfestations of Proteus Syndrome”

Stephen Jo, MD Winner Best Overall “Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial of a Hemostatic Sealant in Children Undergoing Adenotonsillectomy”

At the 63rd annual scientific conference of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, five of the seven manuscript awards went to residents and staff at our Kaiser residency program, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, as well as two of the four honorable mentions. There were 50 manuscripts from across the country which were eligible for the final pool for awards. Following are the manuscripts and authors from the program facilities of Oakland/Richmond, San Francisco, and Walnut Creek Diablo Service Area:

The San Francisco Gynecological Society Meeting on May 3, 2005 was devoted to resident research. Residents from 6 of the 7 Bay Area OB/GYN programs gave presentations, and Dr. Sandy Ramos from our San Francisco OB/GYN program won a $1000 1st prize for best research for her project entitled “ Comparison of Gylburide and Insulin for the Management of Gestational Diabetes in a Large Managed Care Organization”.

Division of Research at Oakland

Kaiser Permanente Northern California is home to our Division of Research. The DoR was founded in 1961, and today its staff of over 400 is actively involved with over 220 active research projects. The DoR and our residency programs have an established relationship, and residents who require access to patient databases, statistics, and other analytical services can contact the DoR for assistance in project planning, data collection and processing.
