Obstetrics & Gynecology at Santa Clara

Curriculum

The residency program emphasizes all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology and affords the opportunity for research. The teaching program is comprehensive, including all major subspecialties in the field, as well as areas of special interest in obstetrics and gynecology. The major subspecialty clinics include Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology, Gynecologic Oncology, and Urogynecology. The High Risk Obstetrical Clinic is staffed by four board certified perinatologists. Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility are likewise taught by three fellowship trained specialists in these fields. The Gynecologic Oncology division consists of two board certified oncologists. The Urogynecology division is headed by a fellowship-trained urogynecologist. Other areas of interest are taught through teaching clinics which include colposcopy, ultrasound, and first and second trimester abortions.

Attending rounds are held daily on each service. In addition, there are 5.5 hours of didactics per week during protected time.

The attending staff allow for progressively increasing responsibility for each resident, consistent with the individual resident's level of achievement, medical knowledge, technical skill and judgement. Attending staff are present in the hospital 24 hours a day and provide immediate consultation to resident staff as needed.

Lectures and Conferences

  • A weekly lecture series for residents addresses important topics in Ob/Gyn subspecialties.
  • Residents prepare and participate in clinical pathology conferences.
  • Residents lead a weekly departmental review of inpatient cases and problems.
