Internal Medicine at San Francisco
Internal Medicine Resident Rotation Schedule
The first year of training, while focusing mainly on inpatient care,
is designed to introduce interns to the concept of an integrated
health care delivery system.
The categorical year consists of:
2 months - ICU/CCU
5 months - General Medicine Wards
0.5-1 month - Night Float
0.5 month - Emergency Medicine
1 month - Ambulatory Care block
3 months - Elective Rotations
The preliminary year consists of:
2 months - ICU/CCU
6 months - General Medicine Wards
0.5-1 month - Night Float
0.5 month - Emergency Medicine
3 months - Elective Rotations
During the Ambulatory Care block, interns participate in patient
education (diabetes care, asthma, cholesterol management, etc.)
in addition to sessions in the Outpatient Medicine Clinic, the Chemical
Dependency and Rehabilitation Program, and the Headache Clinic.
1-1.5 month - ICU/CCU
3 months - General Medicine Wards
1-1.5 month - Night Float
1.5 months - Senior Medical Resident
1 month - Ambulatory Care block
0.5 month Emergency Medicine
0.5 month - Medicine Consult
3 months - Elective Rotations
2 months - General Medicine Wards
0.5 month - Medicine Consult
2 months - Senior Medical Resident
1 month - Hospitalist Rotation
1 month - Community-Based Medicine
1 month - Ambulatory Care block
1 month - Subspecialty Ambulatory
3-3.5 months - Elective Rotations
There are three weeks of vacation each year, taken during elective
rotations.
