Obstetrics & Gynecology at San Francisco
Our Faculty
Gavin Jacobson, MD - Program Director
I grew up in San Antonio, Texas, though have not lived there since graduating high school in 1979. I attended medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and completed my residency training at the University of California, San Francisco. I started my medical practice at Kaiser San Francisco in 1991. In 1993 I followed my wife to Germany where I worked at a US Military hospital (Landstuhl Regional Medical Center) for 3 years. Upon returning I accepted an Associate Professor position in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Milwaukee Campus of the University of Wisconsin Medical School (UWMS). In my 5 years at UWMS I served as the site director for the third-year Ob/Gyn Clerkship; additionally I developed resident training programs in research, colposcopy, family planning and teaching skills. In 2001 I had the opportunity to return to the Bay Area and rejoin Kaiser Permanente, a move that was both professionally and personally rewarding. In 2005 I was recruited to be the Associate Residency Program Director under the tutelage of Dr. Robin Field. I officially transitioned to Program Director in 2008. My areas of special interest include graduate medical education, resident research, family planning, and dysplasia of the lower genital tract. I regularly attend a variety of conferences, including those of the Pacific Coast OB/GYN Society and the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics. I also am an Oral Examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
At the San Francisco Medical Center, I enjoy being part of a cohesive and dedicated group of professionals, as well as being challenged and exposed to cutting edge treatment approaches. I like the diversity of my patient population and the professional atmosphere fostered by our fine peer group. I enjoy teaching and administering in the residency program, as well as providing care to my patients. Outside of work, I enjoy family-oriented activities with my two daughters, including water and snow skiing, and tennis.
Steven Masters, MD - Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology
I
was born and raised in Los Alamos, New Mexico and in upstate New York,
then lived in San Diego, and settled here in the Bay Area over 20
years ago. I received my medical degree from the University of California
at San Diego, and I completed my medical residency right here at Kaiser
San Francisco. I have been with Kaiser Permanente since I began my
medicine practice in 1987. My wife is a Professor at UCSF, where I
am also on the clinical faculty, and our two children are in college
in Maine.
I am interested in all aspects of women's health. I have a very active practice here in both Obstetrics and Gynecology, with a special interest in minimally invasive surgery (such as laparoscopic hysterectomy). As a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a member of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, I strive to keep up to date with the latest information and technology. I also spend some of my time on administration, as the Chief of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, and as the Chief of Outpatient Pharmacy and Therapeutics for the San Francisco facility.
While I do enjoy the high tech aspects of my work, I am actually a big believer in the simple benefits of a healthy lifestyle with plenty of exercise (I am an avid bicycle commuter myself). I especially enjoy the multi-cultural aspects of a practice in San Francisco, and serve on a number of committees and workgroups to promote diversity awareness.
Erica
Weiss, MD – Associate Program Director
I was born and raised in New York and I received my medical degree from the State University at Stony Brook School of Medicine and completed my residency at the University of California, San Francisco. I started my practice with Kaiser Permanente in 2003. I enjoy a wide range of practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology with particular clinical and teaching interests in: family planning; surgery (especially minimally invasive techniques; pre and post-operative care); complex obstetrical issues; complementary medicine; as well as supporting women through healthy birthing options. I also serve on the multidisciplinary committee in caring for Transgender patients and have worked to develop clinical care and teaching tools in this arena. I am also particularly interested in graduate and undergraduate medical education. As Associate Program Director I am particularly involved in developing evaluation tools to assess the core ACGME competencies. I am an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF and serve as the Site Director for the Third Year UCSF medical student clerkship in Ob/Gyn at Kaiser San Francisco.
I love working with the diverse patient population here in San Francisco and am constantly gratified by the impact we have on our patients and the development of our residents into such fine physicians. I find the camaraderie amongst our faculty and residents yields the most positive learning environment. When not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family, yoga, swimming, and outdoor activities-especially running in Golden Gate Park. San Francisco is so exciting and I frequent the local playgrounds and parks as well as restaurants and love planning city escapes.
Stephanie Terry, MD – AssociateProgram Director
I was raised in New York and attended medical school at SUNY Stony Brook on Long Island. I completed my residency training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. I moved to San Francisco and started my practice with Kaiser Permanente in 2007. The most rewarding aspect of working at Kaiser Permanente is treating a culturally and socio-economically diverse patient population with state-of-the-art medical technologies in a collaborative academic environment. I am very interested in nurturing all aspects of this collaborative environment including: graduate and medical education, multidisciplinary treatment of patients (I am the Young Adult Clinic OBGYN leader) and the doctor-patient bond. I believe the commitment to resident and medical student education assures that all physicians in the department of OBGYN are academically and surgically astute and abreast of the latest innovations. In my new position as Assistant Program Director I am administering our didactic curriculum.
Robin Field, MD - Director of Maternal-Fetal-Medicine and Former Program Director
I was born and raised in Oklahoma and I received my medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. After my Obstetrics & Gynecology residency at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Oakland, I completed a fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco, where I am now a Clinical Professor. I began practicing medicine in 1980 and joined Kaiser Permanente in 1988. I am interested in all aspects of pregnancy, especially prenatal diagnostic techniques and high-risk conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. I am always impressed with the magic of pregnancy and the courage of women giving birth. I want to help pregnant women achieve happy outcomes. I love the subspecialty practice I have had for the last 20 years at Kaiser and the opportunity to work closely with residents and medical students. When not working, my wife Carolyn and I can be found at our retreat in the Gold Country or chasing total solar eclipses.
