Sports Medicine Fellowship Program
About the Program
Through the Department of Family Medicine, the Sports Medicine fellowship at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center was created and established in 2002 in order to:
Meet the needs of our ever expanding active and athletic patient population
Expand the academic opportunities of our Family Medicine Residency Program
Help meet our community's need for specialty trained Sports Medicine physicians.
This program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Graduates of this one-year program are eligible to pursue a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine.
Our Sports Medicine Consultation clinic serves as the foundation of clinical experience for the fellow. The full scope of primary care sports medicine is emphasized. Exposure to all aspects of sports medicine, including cardiovascular, pulmonary, and musculoskeletal medicine is afforded the fellow, in addition to advanced, supervised procedural training.
Fellows serve as team physician for California State University Los Angeles, Cathedral and Marshall High School, Valley College, and Occidental College. Alongside the fellowship directors, the fellow serves as co-medical director of the annual Ironman 70.3 California Triathlon and Pasadena Marathon. These sites provide ample opportunity for large-scale pre-participation screening, training room clinic, and acute care for games and events. Academic instruction in Sports Medicine is provided by the fellowship's multi-disciplinary faculty through direct patient care, didactic lectures, conferences and workshops.
Unique Aspects of Program
The program offers two fellowship positions each year. Applicants should have completed or be in the process of completing a residency in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, or Pediatrics at the time of application and should be Board eligible or Board certified in the respective discipline.
