Kendall Scott, MD, ABFP, FAAFP, Program Director
Dr. Scott received his medical degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine in 1979. He completed a three-year residency in the Kaiser Permanente Fontana program, serving as chief resident in his final year. He was the first graduate of our program to join the academic faculty, and has served in that position since 1983. Dr. Scott served 12 years as associate program director before taking over as program director on January 1, 2001.

Patricia Trantham, MD, ABFP
Dr. Trantham received her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. She joined Kaiser Permanente in 1989 after completing her residency training at Santa Monica Hospital. Dr. Trantham became a member of the academic faculty in 1993 serving as behavioral science coordinator and assistant program director. Special interests include maternal/child/women’s health issues and behavioral science.

Robert Theal, MD, ABFP, FAAFP
Dr. Theal completed his bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology at the University of California, Irvine and received his medical degree from the University of California, Davis. He completed his Family Medicine Residency at Valley Medical Center in Fresno and at Selma Community Health Center. Dr Theal joined the Southern California Permanente Medical Group in 1987 and joined the academic faculty in 1987. He serves as the physician-in-charge for the Fontana Family Medicine Center and is the child care liaison to the residency program.

Aaron Rubin, MD, ABFP, FAAFP, FACSM
Dr. Rubin is a transplanted Texan with a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from the University of Texas and a medical degree from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in Lubbock. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at Texas Tech in Amarillo, where he remained as an assistant professor of Family Medicine until coming to Kaiser Permanente Fontana as the first sports medicine fellow in 1989. Dr Rubin serves double duty as program director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship as well as academic faculty member. He has a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine from the American Board of Family Practice.

Robert Sallis, MD, ABFP, FAAFP, FACSM
Dr. Sallis received his Bachelor of Science from the US Air Force Academy and his Medical Degree from Texas A&M University. He completed his residency at Kaiser Permanente Fontana in 1990, where he served as chief resident. He has been the team physician at Pomona College since 1988 and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine. He lectures and publishes extensively in the area of sports medicine. He received the Irving S. Rasgon, MD Award for Excellence in Family Medicine Research. Dr. Sallis serves as director of research and coordinator for medical student clerkships. He is married and has three children. In his spare time, he is active in men’s basketball (having played in college for 4 years), golf, and skiing He is Vice president of the American College of Sports Medicine and associate editor of their journal, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. He is also editor in Chief of Current Sports Medicine Reports.

Stacie Cruz, MD
Dr. Cruz completed the University of California biomedical program and her residency at Kaiser Permanente Family Medicine in Fontana. She brings special skills in adolescent medicine and eating disorders. Her time away from the medical center is used in family activities, gardening and crafts.

Renu Mittal, MD, FAAFP
Dr. Mittal is a graduate of Lutheran
Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY, June 1989, where she was Chief Resident. She
joined the Family Medicine Staff in January 2005 and the Academic
Faculty in June 2005

Nathan D. Carlson, MD, ABFM
Dr. Carlson received two bachelors degrees from the University of
Washington before
completing his medical degree at Loma Linda University. He matched with his wife to the Fontana Family Medicine Residency Program and graduated in June 2002. He fulfilled an active duty service commitment with the US Air Force and then joined the teaching staff at the Madigan Army Medical Center for one year. He returned to Kaiser Permanente Fontana in 2006 and was appointed to an academic faculty position in 2008. He coordinates electronic health record training for residents as well as the non-surgical, mandatory 3rd year rotations. He is also the MD champion for the website kp.org for the Fontana Medical Center. In his free time he can be found chasing his two young daughters through Disneyland and other fun places.
Special Clinical Interests: Successful use of EMR in clinical practice; Vitamin D deficiency (current research project); Urgent Care.

Gabriel E. López, MD
Dr. López received his medical degree from the UCLA School of Medicine in 2000. He completed his residency training at White Memorial Medical Center and worked in private practice until joining Kaiser Permanente in 2006. Dr López joined the academic faculty of the residency program in 2008. He has special interests in minor procedures, orthopedic joint injections, and dermatology. His panel is mainly comprised of Spanish speaking patients and enjoys teaching cultural responsive care to residents.
