Oakland Obstetrics & Gynecology Clerkships
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Kaiser Oakland sponsors a one-month clinical sub-internship for a fourth-year medical student each month from July through January of each academic year. Depending on the third-year UCSF medical student clerkship schedule, we may be able to accommodate 2 sub-interns.
The sub-intern's schedule begins on the 1st Monday of the month and runs for four weeks. We are aware that student schedules may be on different tracks and the start date has a small amount of flexibility. After an applicant has been approved by the Obstetrics/Gynecology Assistant Program Director (APD) and all required documents have been received (i.e., application, immunization record sheet, transcript, and Boards score), the APD notifies the student and confirms the elective. The student will then receive the remaining documents prior to his/her first day of the sub-internship with instructions.
Our sub-internship is designed for students who have already completed a basic core Ob/Gyn rotation. Care is taken to expose the student to all areas of Ob/Gyn and any interesting patients present during the rotation.. A schedule for the month will be given to the sub-intern on the first day of the rotation. Every effort will be made to accommodate special requests. The sub-intern is expected to take 2-3 overnight calls (including one weekend 24 hour shift) and is excused after Teaching Rounds the next day.
The sub-intern will be an integral part of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Team, responsible for performing patient work-ups, making pre-and post-operative and post-partum rounds, and scrubbing on gynecological surgical cases and cesarean sections - all under the close supervision of the staff and senior residents. It is the sub-intern’s responsibility to actively read about specific patient conditions and to make sure that all notes and orders are co-signed by a senior resident or attending physician.
During the clinical clerkship, the sub-intern will be expected to give an evidence-based medicine presentation on an obstetric or gynecologic topic of his/her choice. This presentation is given during noon conference which is attended by the residents, medical students and faculty. Attendance at all resident teaching rounds and conferences is expected. The Chief Resident of the Obstetric or Gynecology Service will be responsible for the student's daily assignments.
The student will also have the option of attending selected outpatient clinics. This will include, but may not be limited to, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, high risk obstetrics, urogynegology, family planning, and colposcopy clinic.
Liability, health insurance, and housing arrangements are the student's responsibility. Lunches are provided on certain weekdays during noon conferences. We prefer students to spend one calendar month or four contiguous weeks within one month during the elective. We expect committed students who are applying for an obstetrics and gynecology residency. All cancellations must be made more than 2 months prior to the scheduled start date.
To apply for a clerkship at Kaiser Oakland's OB/GYN program, interested medical students should complete and submit this Clerkship Application (pdf).
