San Francisco Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology

Fourth-year Medical Student Clerkship

In addition to providing core Ob/Gyn third-year clerkships for UCSF medical students, the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology in San Francisco also offers a sub-internship in GYNECOLOGY for fourth-year medical students each month of the academic year (limit one per month). Rotations are based on a calendar month, though some flexibility may be permitted to align with individual medical school blocks.

This GYN sub-internship is primarily an in-patient experience. There is in-depth exposure to gyn-oncology, urogynecology, benign operative gynecology, and acute care gynecology (through Emergency Department consultations). The sub-intern will be an integral part of the Benign Gynecology and Gyn-Oncology Teams, responsible for performing patient work-ups, making pre-and post-operative rounds, and scrubbing on gynecological surgical cases - all under the close supervision of the faculty and senior residents on the Gynecologic Services.

Each student will have hospital duties from Monday through Friday. There will be no required night call or weekend responsibility.

At the end of the clinical clerkship, the student will be expected to make a 50 minute presentation on a gynecologic topic of their choice at a small group lunch meeting to select faculty and residents. Attendance to all gynecologic resident teaching rounds and conferences is expected. The Chief Resident for the Gynecology Service will be responsible for the student's daily assignments. Dr. Diane Sklar is the faculty director for the sub-internship and provides faculty mentorship and is responsible for the rotational evaluation.

On non-surgical days, the sub-intern will have the opportunity to attend selected outpatient clinics. This may include REI clinic, teen clinic, colposcopy clinic, urogynecology clinic, and urgent care clinic.

We will provide a well-rounded clinical experience for the student with close interaction with the staff and resident physicians. The student will see a wide variety of clinical problems and participate in the active teaching program. The student will also work with third-year medical students from UCSF who rotate in San Francisco for their Ob/Gyn clerkship.

Applications will be reviewed only after all required documents have been submitted (i.e., application, immunization record sheet, transcript, and Boards score). After an applicant has been approved, the Medical Education Office will notify the student and confirm the sub-internship dates. The student will receive the remaining documents prior to their first day of the clerkship.

Liability, health insurance, and housing arrangements, are the student's responsibilities. Lunches are provided on weekdays. We prefer students to spend one calendar month or approximately four weeks within one month during the elective. We expect committed students. All cancellations must be more than 2 months prior to the scheduled start date. Any cancellations less than 2 months will be communicated to the Dean of Student Affairs and the opportunity to interview for a residency position with the program director in our facility will not be granted.
