Chief Residents 2012 - 2013

Chief Residents

Welcome to our program! I was born and raised in the United Arab Emirates. I completed medical school at Stanford, and was fortunate enough to stay in the Bay Area for my residency. The past three years I have spent at Kaiser Oakland have been truly amazing. The camaraderie amongst my fellow residents, as well as with the faculty is one of the many highlights of our program. Our patient population provides great diversity and the opportunities for research are plentiful. In addition, the teaching we receive is unparalleled. As chief resident this year, I am excited to share my wonderful experiences here and help take the program in new and exciting directions. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I look forward to hearing from you!

Shiela Cord, MD
Chief Resident 2012-2013

Welcome to the Kaiser Oakland Internal Medicine Residency page! Congratulations on making it this far in your journey towards becoming a physician. I hope you get the chance to come visit us in person, because words do not do justice to our program. Residents at Kaiser Oakland enjoy close relationships to faculty, a multitude of research opportunities, a diverse patient population AND a life outside of residency. I personally arrived to Kaiser Oakland as a fourth year medical student and was amazed at the ideal educational environment with a comprehensive curriculum and top-notch residents with amazing intellectual curiosity as well as compassion and kindness. I have never regretted coming to Kaiser Oakland and decided to stay an extra year to ensure the residents that follow have a similarly spectacular experience. I specifically encourage you to check out our Global Health Program available all medicine residents (I'm the regional Kaiser resident liaison for global health), our MPH/IM joint residency program and our new bedside ultrasound curriculum. I look forward to meeting you this year!

What our residents are saying:

"Kaiser Oakland was a wonderful place to train. I came here originally
for the depth of clinical cases, supportive and dedicated program
directors, and the benefits of an academic environment in a busy
community hospital. I found these and much more, with great clinical
teaching, super-supportive attendings and staff, and a family of
co-residents that have been some of the best co-workers and friends
that I could want. The flexible schedule allowed me to pursue my own
interests in primary care and form the foundation for my future
career. This is a supportive and well-rounded program that I
am so happy to have been a part of, and I know my experiences with my
attendings, co-residents, and patients here will be with me for years
to come."

Sara Rotner, MD
Primary Care Physician, Kaiser Park Shadelands (Walnut Creek/Bay Area)

"What is Kaiser Oakland to me?   It is a place where there is truly no such thing as a “dumb” question, where you are never alone, where you are allowed to be yourself and learn at your own pace, and a place where you are a valued member of the treatment team.   It is a place where you serve a blue-collar population that is immensely diverse from a socioeconomic, educational, ethnic, and religious standpoint.   All of these qualities in one program, located in the most wonderful part of the country make coming to Kaiser Oakland a decision I have never once regretted and never will."

Ian Concepcion, MD
Hospitalist, Kaiser Vallejo (Bay Area)
